Metropolitan Museum of Art’s permanent collection consist of close to 3 million paintings, sculptures, and other works of art from around the world. McKim, Mead and White designed certain later additions. The American section, added in 1924, included the 1823 marble facade saved from the demolished U.S. Branch Bank on Wall Street. The main building, often called "the Met", is one of the world's largest art galleries. The Metropolitan Museum of Art was founded in 1870 by a group of American citizens.
